Tasting Notes

Offering lifted aromatics with notions of incense and a floral component, there’s a touch of spice and earthiness to the dark cherry and dark plum notes on the nose. Medium fuller bodied this has engaging fruit purity and concentration with a sleek texture and finer tuned tannins to the juicy dark berry fruit flavors. Weighing in at 14.5% alcohol by volume this maintains its freshness and vibrancy and fleshes out with aeration suggesting that this will age beautifully over a good number of years. Simply a terrific representation of the varietal, we suggest you take this to a party and fool a lot of people who would never guess that, yes this is Pinotage, and yes, no matter what it is, it’s world class.

Abrie Beeslaar makes not one, but three of the best Pinotages in South Africa, as well as its most collectable Bordeaux blend. This appears under its own label, as it has since 2012, and has less new oak than the Kanonkop Black Label, as well as a cheaper price tag. Intensely aromatic, with millpond-smooth tannins, notes of incense and blackberry fruit and considerable concentration. 2021-2032.

When considering Pinotage’s potential for greatness, the wine by Abrie Beeslaar under his own label has in relatively short space of time become as important a reference point as anything he makes for the great Stellenbosch property that is Kanonkop.
Current-release is the 2017, the sixth since the maiden 2012, and it is again superbly well crafted. 2017 was the third consecutive year of drought in the Cape Winelands, Stellenbosch receiving 450mm of rain, significantly less than the long-term average of 750mm but every indication to date is that the district still produced some very fine wines.
Fermentation took place in open top concrete tanks with punch downs every two hours, while maturation lasted 20 months in 30 French and two American oak barrels. The nose shows a little floral fragrance before cherries, plums as well as earth, spice and a hint of chocolate. On the palate, the fruit is pure and sweet, with no shortage of freshness despite an alcohol of 14.5%, the tannins firm but fine. It’s luscious in the best sense, sleek, the production values suitably high given an approximate retail price tag of R500 a bottle

Winemaker Notes

Pinotage is not for sissies”, words Jan Boland Coetzee will use to explain the challenges of Pinotage to other winemakers. It was these challenges and the exposure to great old vines baring unique grapes that started this love affair with Pinotage. If you are lucky enough to have the right terroir and put in the effort that Pinotage deserves, there is no wine more rewarding.
