Aquitania 'Lazuli' Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Aquitania 'Lazuli' Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 94 pts Wine Advocate

Tasting Notes

12/18/18
This shows nice Maipo typicity with its mint, herbal, earth infused dark red currant fruit, with no overt suggestions of oak to the wine’s aromatics. Medium fuller bodied, this has a sleek texture, very refined tannins and a firm acid spine that suggests this has a very long life in front of it. More about refinement and elegance, the fruit has noted vibrancy and freshness with good length on the finish. We worked this for a number of days and it just kept rolling along.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

94 pts Wine Advocate Issue #230 April 2017
Their top red is not produced every year, so from the 2011 I tasted last time they jumped to the 2014 Lazuli Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 was produced from vines cropped at 5.5 tons of grapes per hectare. It fermented in 6,500-liter stainless steel vats after four days of cold soak. Malolactic was in barrel, where the wine matured for 16 months. Thirty percent of the barrels were new, yet the wine does not show any oak flavors or aromas, and it feels very nicely integrated. This is balsamic, a little earthy and especially elegant, insinuating rather than in-your-face. The palate is very sleek, with super refined tannins and very good freshness. This was the last Lazuli blended by the late Paul Pontallier of Château Margaux. This certainly over delivers for the price asked. This has great elegance and should age for a very long time. Some 10,000 bottles were produced.

Winemaker Notes

Intense ruby red color. Very elegant and complex on the nose, it has aromas of ripe red fruits, spices, with hints of dried fruits such as figs and dried plums mixed with notes of mocha and tobacco. The palate is harmonious and complex, of great elegance, with a pleasant combination of fruits and spices. With soft and round tannins, this wine presents a great structure and a persistent finish.
