Water Wheel Shiraz 2008

90 pts Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - Packs a serious punch and shows a chewy, youthfully tannic quality on the long, penetrating finish.

Tasting Notes

The 2008 Shiraz is bright purple in appearance. A full bodied, coplex wine with rich plum and cherry flavors, hints of black pepper and spices, finishing with velvet tannins.

Food Accompaniments

A superb table wine, ideal to serve with a wide variety of red meat dishes.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

90 pts Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Sept. 2011
Glass-staining ruby. Expansive aromas of cherry-cola, black raspberry, pipe tobacco and cracked pepper. Very rich but lively, offering dense red and dark berry flavors and a hint of licorice. Packs a serious punch and shows a chewy, youthfully tannic quality on the long, penetrating finish. In need of another few years in bottle, but this actually could be drunk soon, following some aeration.

88 pts Robert Parker Jr.'s The Wine Advocate (LPB)
The 2008 Shiraz has a little more alcohol and weight with a deep garnet purple color and scents of warm blackberry, tar, loam, licorice and pepper. Big, full and rich with medium-high acid and a medium level of fine tannins, it is a little hot in the long finish. Drink it now and over the next 3-4 years.

87 pts Wine Spectator Magazine (HS)
Bright and juicy, refreshing for its beet-accented berry and wet earth flavors, lingering nicely.

Winemaker Notes

Soil is deep ripped before planting. Vines are spaced at approx one metre, with around 20 buds per vine, and hedged trellised, exposing the grapes to the sun to achieve maximum ripeness. They are cane pruned one year in four followed by three years of spur pruning. All vines are irrigated from the nearby Loddon river with ground level mini sprays. Red wine grapes are planted on heavy clay soil with pieces of limestone present in the soil.
