Vasse Felix’s Heytesbury Red is a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with small dollops of Shiraz, Merlot and Malbec, made from the best lots that the estate has to offer. Endowed with an alluring amalgam of enticing aromas, cigar box, cedar spice, bitter chocolate, earthy, tar notes as well as a hint of smoke and eucalyptus that mesh harmoniously into red currant, plum and black berry fruit, this has an impressive aromatic profile. Displaying good weight and density the palate balances the savory, earthy tones of cedar and cigar box with succulent, juicy fruit flavors of black current and red berries with Cabernet’s herbal note surfacing as an endnote on the long, dry finish. Blessed with excellent structure, the tannins are firm but not overly assertive which makes it accessible now but worthy of further aging up to another 6-8 years easily. Quite an impressive effort on this one. |

91+ pts The Wine Advocate Issue # 155
The impressive, dense ruby/purple colored 2002 Heytesbury Proprietary Red, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with tiny dollops of Merlot, Malbec, and Shiraz, offers up scents of cigar smoke, dried Provencal herbs, blackberries, and currants. It is the fullest-bodied, most concentrated and structured of the Vasse Felix offerings. Chocolate, cedar, and black currant characteristics appear in the flavor profile of this moderately tannic offering. Give it 1-2 more years of bottle age, and consume it over the following 10-12. |
