Urraca Primera Reserva 2005 classy Malbec/Merlot blend out of Mendoza
Tasting
Notes
3/4/10
Malbec is king in Mendoza and rightly so, but we rarely see it blended with Merlot, which when you try this wine makes you wonder why it isn’t done more often. The 2005 Urraca Primera Reserva is a blend of 70 % Malbec and 30% Merlot, respectively, with a combo of French and American oak treatment. The end result is a wine that in simple terms is just gorgeous. From the exotic nose of spicy cinnamon and cedar overlaying the plump blueberry and dark red fruits to the seamless palate, this has a lot going on. Dense yet with nice lift and brightness this medium fuller offering has a captivating aromatic profile and the matching palate making it an exceptional bottle of wine.

90 pts Wine Advocate Issue #180 Dec 2008
The 2005 Primera Reserva is composed of 70% Malbec and 30% Merlot. It received the same elevage as its younger sibling. It is a large-scaled, purple-colored wine with aromas of cassis, blueberry, and black cherry that jump from the glass. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, layered, savory, and dense. It has enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years and the finish is long and pure.
