2010 Simonsig Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz
We thought that the 2009 version of this particular label with was a great deal and one of our better go-to deals all year. So when the 2010 came in we weren’t sure what to expect, we were hoping for the best but one can never be too certain. After trying the wine we realized the folks at Simonsig were putting some serious effort into one of their entry level, value positioned labels. As much as we liked the 2009, this is better. The nose is savory upfront with notes reminding of pepper, mocha, leather and earth with black fruits rolling up underneath. As intriguing as the nose is the palate is the deal maker, with a suppleness and upfront fruit in the darker red perspective, with enough sweetness to balance out the savory earth tones and spice nuances. The tannins firm up everything nicely and all in all, for the money, this is a real crowd pleaser, with enough structure to have some short term aging ability. This has surprising depth and calls for grilled or lightly smoked meats.
