Shiraz

A lot of speculation surrounds the origin of this grape. Some believe it originated in Persia, in the city of Shiraz, then found its way to France via the crusades. We do know for sure that it spread from France to all corners of the globe and exists today as a significant portion of many of the world’s most prominent wine growing countries – including South Africa and Australia (where it is the most planted red grape varietal). Outside of the Rhone Valley, some call it Shiraz while others call it Syrah, but there does not appear to be any hard and fast rule determining why a producer would choose one or the other. The Aussies have really been the ones to champion this grape outside of France with some of the most striking examples and some of the oldest vineyards. No matter where it is grown, this grape shows characteristic spice tones – the cooler the climate, the more white spices (cardamom, white + green peppercorn, coriander) and the warmer the climate the more dark spices it shows (black pepper, clove, anise). Flavors run from black plums and licorice and prunes in warmer regions, to red plums and raspberries in cooler regions. Acids are typically higher in the cooler regions and those examples tend to pair better with food, while warm region examples make for massive wines with high alcohols that lend themselves simply to drinking.
