June 2013 - Over the years we have come to love the wines of Victoria, and this wine is the reason why. Victoria has the diversity to make cool climate Pinot Noirs, rich and delicious Rhone whites like Viognier, and some fantastic Cabernet too. This Cabernet comes from the northern reaches of Victoria near the town of Mildura. The climate is warm with cool nights. Proprietor George Shinas likely gave up the hustle and bustle of a legal career in the city for life in the country. His other wines have names like The Guilty Shiraz or The Innocent Viognier.
The Verdict Cabernet is a full bodied cab that exhibits generous fruit flavors of plum and dried cherry, combined with some chocolate and cedar in the background. The mouthfeel is soft and big, the flavors of cherries and raspberries coat the mouth, and cocoa powder lingers on the finish. The use of wood is balanced and does not in any way detract from the fruit weight. Pair with barbeque foods like ribs or steak, or burgers off the grill. Drinking well now, should provide good quaffing for the next 3 years.
