Pikes out of the Clare Valley have taken the approach that wine is best with food. Many times their wines haven’t been given the acknowledgement they deserve because they aren’t made in the front loaded, fruit forward style that seem to catch the critics attention. Not that these wines are lacking in fruit, after all this is South Australia. Pikes just make wines with a more savory character, possessing good acidity and structure while still having the engaging fruit that South Australia is famous for. The 2005 Red Mullet is a blend of Shiraz, Mourvedre, Tempranillo and Grenache, respectively. What you get is a nice play between earth tones and a combo of red and black fruits. The palate has a nice suppleness in a medium-fuller weight format, with moderate tannins and good acidity that gives this exceptional food diversity. This is the perfect call for barbequed Baby Back ribs with a spicy dry rub. |

($18; 76% shiraz, 9% mourvedre, 8% tempranillo and 7% grenache) Bright ruby. Strongly spicy nose displays peppery dark berry and cherry aromas and a mounting mineral quality; really showing its syrah today. Silky red and dark berries on the palate, with an exotic violet pastille note adding interest. The spiciness repeats on the suave finish, which is focused, sweet and clean. |
