Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2008 simply outstanding - from the cool Tumbarumba region of New South Wales
Tasting
Notes
5/5/10
Classically restrained in both the nose and palate this high elevation, cool climate Chardonnay is about elegance with bright fruits highlighted with a vein of minerality and good acidity. The nose offers up a slight butternut quality that becomes more pronounced as the wine opens up, along with white peach and citrus/lime notes. The palate has a precision to the citrus and white orchard tree fruits, with a slight creaminess that adds roundness and weight, countered with lively acidity. Medium bodied, with expressive fruit purity this has surprising depth and power in the way of fruit intensity with a nice lingering finish. Everything is in balance creating a New World wine that if one put it into a lineup of Old World Chardonnay you could be fooled on the results. Distinctive and a really lovely drop for the money, it’s quite easy to see why this style of Chardonnay has so many fans.
