4/30/10
A Chilean Red blend from the Maipo Valley made by one of that country’s foremost recognized winemakers, Alverado Espinoza. Pretty much a kitchen blend encompassing all but one red Bordeaux varietal, you have to count Carmenere as a Bordeaux red varietal (only Merlot is missing); along with Syrah, only around 2,500 cases were produced, all from estate grown fruit. The nose says it’s from Chile and yes the Maipo Valley, with its loamy, mint laced aromatics, but here the eucalypt note is not over the top, with nice red berry and currant and plum notes interwoven into the savory top note aromatically. The palate is all about pure class, with excellent fruit purity, soft and supple, medium fuller to fuller bodied, with ripe tannins that lets the fruit caress the palate with lovely, lingering assorted red fruit flavors and just a touch of loam and toast surfacing up through on the finish. Showing beautifully right now this should drink gorgeously over the next 3-4 years.

91 pts Wine Advocate Issue #182 April 2009
The 2006 Pargua II is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenere, 15% Syrah, and the balance Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Also produced from organically grown grapes, the wine is sweeter, riper, richer, and more concentrated than its less expensive sibling. Already complex, with another 3-4 years in the bottle to blossom, it will provide exceptional drinking between 2013 and 2026. |
