Nugan Estate 'Vision' Shiraz 2009

89 pts Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - Finishes with very good clarity and spicy cut, but without any rough edges.

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson with a youthful purple hue. Complex aromas of blackberry, chocolate, earth and spice. Full-bodied red wine with powerful fruit concentration. On the palate, well-structured blend of berries and mocha with supple, lingering tannins enhanced by well integrated vanillin oak.

Food Accompaniments

This wine lends itself to a variety of meat dishes. The spicy overtones work well with Asian and Indian foods, as well as complimenting the more traditional flavors of roast lamb or slow cooked beef cheeks.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

89 pts Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Sept. 2011 (JR)
Vivid ruby. Complex bouquet of red and dark berries, spicecake and fresh flowers. Juicy and fresh, with vibrant cassis and dark chocolate flavors, supple tannins and a touch of cracked pepper. Finishes with very good clarity and spicy cut, but without any rough edges.

89 pts Wine Spectator Magazine (HS)
Smooth and generous, a plush-textured, medium-weight mouthful of ripe cherry and blackberry fruit. Picks up earthy notes as the finish lingers.

Winemaker Notes

Above average temperatures through December and January resulted in heat waves prolonging the onset of veraison, which occurred mid-late January. Cooler February temperatures coupled with lower evaporation rates maintained good leaf health which resulted in rapid increase in sugar levels. After picking, the Shiraz was crushed and softly bag pressed in traditional style to avoid the extraction of bitter tannins. The wine was fermented in static fermenters, followed by further 14months maturation with seasoned French and American oak prior to final blending.
