Meerlust has made a very impressive Merlot in the 2005 vintage. This has a solid core of dark plum and mulberry fruit backed with some savory, earth undertones that are nuanced into the fruit rather than dominating as well as some subtle leafiness and oak, cedar-spice notes adding extra complexity. New World fruit concentration is countered with Old World structure giving this wine some serious pedigree. Finishing dry with finer grained, almost powdery tannins the core of darker red fruit finishes with a slight chocolate edge which adds an interesting end note. This should evolve nicely over the next 5-6 years.
