The 2004 Marklew Capensis is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Pinotage, respectively. Aged in oak barrels for 22 months this has a subtle toast and oak spice component along with some graphite, a touch of leather, dried flowers, and licorice to the assorted dark red fruit tones on the nose. Medium fuller bodied with powdery tannins on the finish, there is core of dark red and dark fruits, reminding of plum and currant with some savory notes building on the dry finish, giving some spice and licorice flavors that compliment the fruit nicely. More about elegance and refinement than power, this still offers good fruit concentration and vibrancy, with the tannins firming up the dry finish, suggesting that this has 3-4 more years of good drinking ahead of it.
