Margrain Pinot Gris 2008 clean with exceptional fruit purity
Tasting
Notes
4/30/10
Having tried the 2008 Margrain Pinot Gris several months back we were thoroughly impressed and we felt it was one of the more interesting white wines we had tried out of New Zealand. We were impressed by the fact that you have a medium bodied wine with this much flavor and precision. The nose reminds of fresh pear fruit and apple compote with some orange blossom lift and edgier lemon/citrus zest with a faint note of hay in the background. The palate is not weighty by any measure, yet is refreshing with a clear definition along bright, linear lines with noted clarity, without any oiliness to the texture, just driving, pristine white orchard fruit flavors, a little white peach mid palate richness and some racy, tangy, citrus, lemon fruit on the lingering dry finish. Bone dry with no detectable residual sugar this is simply a pleasure to drink with its pristine, pure fruit flavors. Showing well even at this youthful stage in its life this should age nicely over the next 2-3 years, possibly longer. (Gregg Phillips)
