Viña La Playa is the fruition of a long held dream of Soren Axelsen who left his home in Denmark in 1952 to see the world. His travels took him through Chile and he eventually settled in California and grew grapes. The Axelsen family made a name for themselves in the Californian wine industry, but the Colchagua Valley stayed in Soren’s memory and he remembered the ideal growing conditions he had seen there, and the desire to grow grapes and make wine in Chile was firmly planted in him. After many years he finally found a way to make his dream become a reality and in 1989 he founded Viña La Playa with his two sons as a joint venture with the Errazuriz and Sutil families of Chile, both of which are very well known in the Chilean wine industry.
Chile has a diverse geography and a very long coastline with many rivers flowing from the Andes towards the ocean. Viña La Playa (which means “The Beach”) was named for Chile’s wild and rugged coastline, and for the rivers and water which nourishes the vines. The Colchagua Valley is ideal for viticulture, with ample sunshine, hot days and cool nights. The winery, located in Colchagua, is on 600 acres and they have another 200 acres in the Limari Valley to the North.
In 2002 Viña La Playa expanded and upgraded their winery facility to a multi-million dollar facility with state of the art equipment. In 2004 they opened a hotel on their premises which caters to tourists exploring the Colchagua Valley. This is the first winery based four star hotel in Chile which offers guests a unique experience in hospitality.
