KWV is a producer, distributor and marketer of high quality wine, spirits and grape juice concentrate. Apart from its famous cellar complex in Paarl, KWV also has production facilities in the towns of Worcester, Robertson, Montagu, Stellenbosch, Vredendal and Upington.

KWV was founded in 1918 to represent the interests of the South African wine farmer. Although considerable development and adaptation has taken place over the decades, the company's objectives are still in line with the original mission of the organisation. KWV is owned by producers and employees and strives to be a world-class company which produces and supplies quality products of the vine and associated services to global markets. Thereby, it contributes to the stable growth of the South African wine industry, benefit in all its shareholders.

PAARL CELLAR:
This internationally renowned cellar is the largest in the world, covering an area of 22 hectares. More than 100 different natural wines, as well as brandies and fortified wines are produced here for the international markets. A tour of the cellar begins with an audiovisual presentation, then a visit to the famous Cathedral Cellar with its barrel-vaulted roof. The five largest vats under one roof can be seen in an adjacent cellar The tour concludes with a tasting of various KWV products.

A restructuring process was initiated in 1996 to position KWV to meet the requirements of its international clients. KWV was thus transformed on December 2, 1997, from a co-operative structure into a group of companies, which are further divided into divisions. KWV Group Limited is the holding company whose shares are held mainly by wine farmers. The shareholders each has a share and equal voting rights in KWV Co-operative Limited, which retains the controlling vote in KWV Group Limited.

The establishment in 1995 of KWV International, the dynamic marketing company of the KWV Group, resulted in KWV's products gaining considerable sales momentum overseas. High quality natural and fortified wines and grape juice concentrate are available on international markets through major importers, wholesalers and distributors. Joint venture agreements and wholly owned subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Western and Central Europe, USA, Canada and the Middle and Far East, have secured a major share of South Africa's wine exports for KWV International.

In 1997, Vernon Davis, KWV International's marketing director, who is now the company's managing director, headed an international benchmarking exercise that has resulted in the implementation of a focused brand strategy. Extensive market research and analysis of the international wine trade was necessitated by the demand for South Africa's products of the vine, resulting from its new access to global markets in the early 1990's.

The KWV International portfolio comprises the following:
Cathedral Cellar range: KWV's flagship range of wines for the connoisseur; most awarded top wine range in South Africa.

Roodeberg: Well known red blended wine, now in a new, improved style.

KWV range: The most established and commercially successful brand in the range; includes best-sellers such as Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. These wines are unique in composition and flavour.

Robert's Rock: A New World Wine concept! Reliable, easy-drinking wines that bear the hallmark of the South African winemaker, made in a full-bodied style.

Individual, trendsetting brands: Fun, refreshing wines that are affordable, yet provide a talking point for the consumer.

Joint Ventures:
A search for unique wine areas in South Africa has led to the creation of a project, named KWV International's Wine of Origin "Classic Collection". This consists of Joint Ventures with cellars and estates possessing vineyards of unique terroir, climate and characteristics. An exclusive range of each cellar's wines is marketed in selected export markets, affording the cellar a direct interest in the marketplace. The wide spectrum of South African wines in the international market boosts export opportunities for the entire Cape wine industry.
