91 pts Wine Enthusiast Magazine - Intense red fruits-rasp-berries and cherries – and minty, herbal complexity. |
Tasting
Notes |
|
The 2006 Boundary Row GSM contains ripe fruit characteristics with delicious savoury and aromatic floral flavours combining with spices and black cherry on the nose and a savoury mouth filling palate. A lingering finish with fine tannins evident. The blending of Shiraz and Mataro has added complexity to the dry grown Grenache and ageing for 24 months in French barrels has enhanced the combination of these three varieties, creating a full-bodied wine suited to most situations. |

I suggest red meats, Osso Bucco or game birds such as duck or quail. Rich sauces are complimented by the ability of this wine to meld all the various flavours. |

Reviews and other Notes |
91 pts Wine Enthusiast Magazine This likeable blend of 45% Grenache 30% Shiraz and 25% mataro (Mourvedre). Features a mix of intense red fruits-rasp-berries and cherries – and minty, herbal complexity. Its soft and round and altogether pleasing with just a dusting of silky tannins on the long finish.
90 pts Robert Prker Jr.'s The Wine Advocate (JM) Kurtz Family’s 2006 Boundary Row GSM is a blend of 45% Grenache, 30% Shiraz, and 25% Mataro aged in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads. Purple-colored, it exhibits an alluring bouquet of cedar, leather, earth notes, spice box, wild cherry, and blueberry. This leads to a mouth-filling wine which is layered, sweet, and expansive on the palate. It has the potential to evolve for a few years but can be enjoyed now.
90 pts Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (JR) Vivid ruby color. Sexy bouquet of fresh red berries, cherry preserves, flowers and Asian spices. Round and sappy, offering concentrated but lively red and dark berry and spice flavors, with fully integrated tannins. This is inviting right now and I’d be tempted to enjoy it on the young side.
88 pts Wine Spectator Magazine (HS) Polished and generous, with a funky edge to the plum and spice flavors, finishing with an earthy tone and fine tannins. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. |
Winemaker Notes |
The wine was made with minimal interference from the winemaker. Fermentation was for 7 – 10 days depending on the parcel of fruit. Malo-lactic ferment was encouraged as soon as primary ferment was completed. All parcels were kept separate for primary ferment and then blended once Malo was through and spent a further 24 months in barrel. Although suitable for current consumption, this wine will continue to improve for a further 4-5 years with careful cellaring. The majority of the Grenache is from 85-year-old bush vine Grenache from the Kalimna sub-region of the Barossa Valley. Vines are spurring pruned to reduce yield and bunch thinning is undertaken if the crop load is too high. A long ripening period allowed for full and natural ripening.
