Kanonkop has been at the forefront of producing one of South Africa’s more recognized Pinotage with the price tag to go with it. The name of the game has been consistency and the just released 2005 continues to carry the banner, offering some interesting earth nuances with a hint of allspice, pepper, vanilla and a faint charcoal and banana note coming up underneath, buttressed with a core of cherry and red plum fruit on the nose. Here the structure and flavor profile works towards the Pinot part of the lineage in the palate, with bright, spicy cherry fruit accentuated with a touch of spice and the ever so slight charcoal component as an endnote. Medium-fuller bodied, supple and round in texture with a lovely core of red fruit and a smooth elongated finish, this has class written all over it. Although this is showing beautifully out the gate this has a history of good mid term aging potential. This is really a sexy wine as it shows a lot of elegance and polished fruit.
