Located in the Bottelary Hills, approximately 10 miles
northwest of Stellenbosch, Groenland has been owned
and run by the Steenkamp family for three generations. Present
owner and winemaker, Kosie Steenkamp has been at the helm
since 1975, his son, Piet who will continue the family legacy, came
on board in 2001 acting as assistant winemaker and viticulturist.
The Bottlelary area is recognized for the cultivation of red grape
varietals and Kosie has undertaken extensive plantings of Cabernet
Sauvignon, Pinotage, Merlot and Shiraz. The estate is 188 hectares
of which 152 hectares are under vine.
Named after owner’s Kosie and
Helene Steenkamp’s two daughters,
Groenland’s Antoinette Marie is a
blend of Shiraz (50%), Cabernet
Sauvignon (34%) and Merlot (16%),
respectively, aged for 12 months in
new French oak barrels. The nose
offers of soft spice and toast inflections,
a faint note of pepper with a core of
dark red fruits on the nose. Medium
fuller bodied, this has a plush, supple texture and polished tannins
with engaging, nicely detailed, layered dark currant, cassis and dark
plum fruit flavors with just a touch of spice and savoriness on the
finish. This is just now starting to open up and should really show
nicely over the next 2-3 years. |
