2006 Felton Road Chardonnay outstanding - from the Central Otago region

5/1/08
Felton Road is recognized as one of the first wineries to put the Central Otago area of New Zealand on the map. Their entire lineup of wines is quite impressive; all are impeccably made, possessing exceptional fruit purity, structure and balance. When we tried the 2006 Chardonnay we were simply blown away. A wine with this much poise and elegance and yet so many things going on. Here you get lots of subtleties - toast, smoky oak, buttered nut, lees, mineral and a core of lively fruit, pear, peach and citrus. Dry, clean, cut with beautiful precision and an engaging, lingering finish, think of Burgundy with a touch more fruit weight, yet with restraint and fine tuned oak. It all adds up to a very impressive bottle of wine.
