A blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, respectively. This is a single vineyard wine that is only produced in exceptional years, in extremely limited quantities. It is regarded as one of New Zealand’s icon, cult wines with the pricing and demand to go with it. This vintage, the 2004 saw around 300 cases produced in total.
The nose offers up lots of interesting nuances showcasing both pedigree and complexity. Notes of red currant and blackberry are complimented with a touch of chocolate and a spicy, floral, as well as a leafy component to fruit. Even though this has an ever so subtle leafy, veggie element there is no greenness to the fruit at all. The palate has a luxurious, creamy feel, refined, almost silky smooth and layered, with ultra-fine tannins pushing through on the back end. The fruit is sweet but reserved, with an assortment of flavors, red and dark red come to the fore, with an ever so slight hint of loam and mocha,/char on the finish. This is really about refinement and structure with exceptional balance, depth to the fruit and a beautiful engaging texture. Long and lingering on the finish this is a wine to contemplate and enjoy ever so slowly as it opens up.
