Craneford

Craneford Shiraz 2001

John Zilm is in full stride. This is Barossa weight and richness without the burn of high alcohol.

Tasting Notes

John Zilm is a masterful winemaker. In an area that has no problem producing highly alcoholic wines, John strives for more balance in his wines without the heat that many times comes with the territory. His 2001 shiraz is a masterpiece. Plush textured with sleek, slippery tannins and gobs of sweet, concentrated fruit and most importantly, exceptional complexity make this the total package Barossa Shiraz. An amalgam of aromas comes forth on the nose from the savory to the purer fruit tones. Savory notes of shoe polish, saddle leather, a touch of pepper, a floral lift, licorice like, then more primary tones of assorted black fruits surface underneath. On the palate the fruit is pure and sweet with layers of concentrated black fruits, plum, black berries, with a slippery, high glycerol, mouth filling, voluptuous texture and melt in your mouth tannins.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

Parker 92 pts. Another knock-out offering, the 2001 Shiraz boasts an opaque purple color as well as tremendous depth, hints of chocolate, licorice, blackberries, and cassis, massive concentration on the palate, low acidity, and ripe tannin. The result is a mouthfilling, thick, succulent South Australian Shiraz fruit bomb with surprising complexity and purity. It should drink well for 10-15 years.
