Viña Concha y Toro proudly bears the name of its founder, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, Marqués de Casa Concha, a passionate politician and rigorous historian during the golden age of Chilean historiography.
In 1883, Don Melchor founded, together with his wife doña Emiliana Subercaseaux, the Concha y Toro vineyard and brought to Chile, as did other visionary developers who were establishing vineyards at the time, the best grape varieties of the Bordeaux region: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Merlot.
In 1923 the family incorporated the winery as a stock company and beginning to sell shares on the Santiago stock market. The first shipment of Concha y Toro wines was disembarked at the port of Rotterdam in March 1933. It was a small beginning, but set the course for the company. Since then, at first slowly and then with dizzying speed, the winery concentrated its efforts on exporting quality wines.
A the end of the 1950s, the winery began the enormous process of acquiring vineyards and adapting the business to the requirements of demanding markets. In 1987 Concha y Toro partnered with US importer Banfi Vintners, and sped up this in-depth process of modernizing its systems, incorporating advanced technology into all of its production stages, and including small French oak barrels. The Marqués de Casa Concha, and afterwards the famous Don Melchor wine, was born as a result of these efforts. The third stage of this plan of investment in land, technology, and installed capacity began in 1991, with the goal of producing high quality fine wines. Since 1994, shares of Viña Concha y Toro have been traded on the New York Stock Exchange, which permitted the company to acquire greater funding for its investment plan during the second half of this decade.
Today, Concha y Toro wines originate from the producer's own vineyards which consist of 7,400 acres (3,000 hectares) spread throughout the four wine valleys (Maipo, Maule, Rapel and Casablanca) of Chile.
There are few places in the world where nature has favored a territory as much as in the Chilean Central Valley, where nearly 300 days of rich sun a year shine on the vineyards. The soft ocean breezes, the impressive Andes mountains, perfectly balanced soil components and clean mountain rivers, create an ideal micro-climate for cultivating the noblest French stock.
These geographical barriers also act as a natural defense against the feared Phylloxera louse, from which Chile has always been spared. Thus in the heart of the Maipo Valley, in the Maule and the Rapel valleys, and recently in the Casablanca valley, Concha y Toro has widely diversified its own plantings, currently reaching 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) divided among ten vineyards with unique micro-climates. In this way, control of the winemaking process can be guaranteed under any circumstances.
The Maipo flatlands tap the strength of the river that gushes down from the high Andean reaches, whose oxygen- and mineral-rich snowcap waters generously irrigate the surrounding vineyards.
