Clayfield 'Grampians' Shiraz 2001

Classy, ripe, cool climate Shiraz from the Grampians region of western Victoria, Australia

Tasting Notes

4/30/04 This is a beautifully structured wine from a cooler climate area, made in a warmer vintage. The nose is quite intriguing, combining lifted floral notes, earth, a touch of mint (subtle) with spice and white pepper over brighter black cherry and black raspberry fruit tones and denser black plum notes.Vibrant and juicy in the mouth it has a Rhone nuance, with its earth and white pepper spice notes, with tremendous fruit purity, supple textured, backed by ripe, almost silky tannins finishing dry on the long, persistent finish. This is a very polished wine that would work great with lamb chops, or a spicy Thai beef dish.

Food Accompaniments

lamb, beef, Spicy Thai beef

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

Robert Parker Issue #148 89 pts This elegant, dark ruby/purple-colored, textured Shiraz offers up tarry black currant and cherry fruit mixed with subtle oak as well as loamy soil scents. Possessing a European-styled, refreshing quality to its fruit, it is not a blockbuster effort such as those that typically emerge from McLaren Vale, Barossa, and Clare Valley. It should age handsomely for 10-12 years.
