Chateau Tanunda 'Grand Barossa' Shiraz 2009 another exceptional effort
This is a terrific follow up the 2008 vintage that was a 2011 Wine spectator Top 100 selection (#33). This may have a bit more structure and may be a tad dryer and not quite as juicy but for under $15 it still pretty much knocks it out of the park. A combo of spicy dark berry and plum fruit are lifted with a hint of black pepper aromatically. The palate is medium fuller-fuller bodied with spicy dark red berry flavors riding on a bed of finer grained tannins. The finish is dry which plays off nicely against the wine’s vibrant fruit flavors. The goal of the Grand Barossa range is for fruit expression and purity to be front and center, with the oak interplay kept to a supporting rather than a major part of the equation. The end result is a wine that has impeccable balance and sense of refinement and elegance while still showcasing Barossa Valley fruit generosity.
