South Africa is not known for Pinot Noir, and rightly so, but there are a few versions that every once in a while will jump out at you and make you take notice. Outside of Hamilton Russell there really hasn’t been anyone to carry the torch with any consistency. That may change with the likes of producers like Chamonix. Located high up in Francshhoek above the valley floor this is an estate that seems to have a fix on cooler climate varietals with its high elevation grown fruit. The 2007 Reserve Pinot Noir is simply outstanding, with just the right amount of everything that gives Pinot Noir its appeal. Restrained yet expressive, offering a sense of place with great depth to the rich red fruit core, lingering, well proportioned in its scale and textural feel, but most importantly no matter its origins, a great expression of the varietal.

07(adds 'Reserve' to name) delicious now but built to age for min 5+ yrs. Cherry/fennel/vanilla notes persist from aroma to long finish. Pure-fruited, but also the earthy/sous bois of fine Burgundy. Nat ferment. 14 mth oak, 80% new.
