The word out on this wine from ex winemaker at Hamilton Russell, Kevin Grant, is that this label, Serenity, is a work in progress, with the varietal composition undisclosed and sourced from various unnamed vineyard sites. What you will notice about the wine is its pedigree and cool climate sheen. An upfront spicy, almost peppery, gamey component adds nuance to the darker currant and red berry, raspberry fruit whiffs out of the glass, punctuated with even a slight floral lift and an ever so subtle hint of smokiness coming through as a backdrop on the aromatics. Could this have some well managed Pinotage in the blend, maybe some Pinot Noir or Shiraz? Guessing is part of the intrigue, but once you try the wine you will captivated by its sleek texture and seamless tannin base with a delicious, vibrant core of darker red berry fruit flavors and a bit of meaty, gaminess and subtle smokiness coming through on the finish. Refined and poised with lovely fruit weight and purity this possesses a round, supple mouth feel and ultra fine tannins that makes this drink gorgeously right now. Impressive for its depth and mouth filling fruit this should really gather some attention, even if we don’t know exactly what its components are in the blend. |
