Inexpensive Pinot Grigio can be a very iffy proposition most of the time. So when we were presented this offering from the northern realms of the Salta region of Argentina we weren’t sure what to expect. The packaging and labeling made it look way more expensive than the asking price, but the question was what was in the bottle? To our surprise the juice in the bottle was able to match the classy packaging. Stylistically this reminds of something out of the Pacific Northwest, think of Oregon, but at a better price point.
This has a lovely floral top note, along the lines of lychee and subtle honeysuckle, that along with the peach and melon fruit jumps out at you aromatically. The palate has enough plumpness and richness to it to give nice mid palate flesh, but the style is more about juicy, almost crunchy fruit with a linear drive. Peach and melon fruit upfront finishing with a citric kick on the finish. Not fat or oily, the acidity is lively and palate cleansing, countered with good fruit weight and intensity that makes this very food compatible as well as an exceptional quaffer on its own. For the money this is an impressive everyday go to wine.
