Hunter Valley Semillon is recognized as one of Australia’s great viticultural treasures. Picked early to ensure a zippy freshness and a lower alcohol level, most weighing in around 11%, they are initially quite tight in the palate when young with lemony, citrus flavors that with time blossom into wines with a toasty, biscuity, honeyed quality that you would swear were given some wood treatment. But that is the trick, no wood, just stainless steel fermentation that helps ensure focusing acidity throughout the life of the wine which can age from 10-20 years depending on the vintage, cellaring conditions and of course lots of patience.
Allendale is small producer located in the Lower Hunter Valley several hours north, north east of Sydney. Established in 1978 under the guidance of owners Wally and Judith Atallah, Allendale has evolved from a small cellar door operation to now produce over 20,00 cases of wine with exports to five countries. White wines are their specialty with the majority of their fruit coming out of the local Hunter Valley. Sourced predominantly from a 25 year old vineyard, the 2007 Allandale Semillon showcases classic Hunter Valley attributes for the varietal, clean, crisp with noted acidity, lower alcohol and lots lemon, lime, grapefruit flavors that is perfect for seafood the first phase of its potential life. Then if not drank young it should be laid down for at least 5 years after that to let it develop its tertiary characteristics where it morphs into a completely different wine. |
