2006 Achaval Ferrer Malbec 91 pts Wine Spectator - as always something pretty special

The obvious thing is that when you think of Acheval Ferrer their limited production, single vineyard Malbec comes to mind, as they are without a doubt some of the finest wines being produced in the world. But they have become so expensive and limited in availability that it created issues for both consumer and winery. So the answer was to produce a mainstream Malbec from Mendoza that would still dazzle without the excessive price tag and still deliver the house’s impeccable quality. There’s exceptional fruit purity and concentration but a backbone of structure that keeps this tightly coiled and made for some solid mid term aging potential. This will only get better with a few years under its belt. As with all Acheval Ferrer wines this is top shelf quality.

Ripe and forward, with blackberry and boysenberry fruit augmented by notes of violet, mineral and sweet toast. The long, rounded finish shows a mineral tang. Drink now through 2008. 92 pts Wine Advocate Issue #174 Dec 2007 Compared to the 2005, the 2006 Malbec has a more expressive nose and is more structured. It would profit from 4-6 years of additional cellaring and will drink well through 2020.
