Casarena Reserva Malbec 2011

91 pts Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - Finishes even and long, with supple, building tannins, sweet fruit and a note of coffee oak.

Tasting Notes

With a deep, dark violet color, the nose shows aromas of violets, black fruits and a hint of fresh strawberries. The mouth feel is dense, with sweet black fruit flavors and soft tobacco and sweet spice notes from French oak aging. The finish presents marked minerality and lingering flavors.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

(aged in 50% new oak): Good bright ruby. Captivating aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, herbs and mocha oak, plus a hint of fig. Densely packed, fresh and intense, offering very good extract and life in the mouth. Finishes even and long, with supple, building tannins, sweet fruit and a note of coffee oak. Classy and satisfying for the price.

The 2011 Reserva Malbec is sourced from selected plots and spends 12 months in French oak, 20% new. It has a fragrant, floral bouquet with dark cherries, blueberry and a touch of quince that is very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with toasty tannins. It is nicely balanced with firm structure, the attractive licorice notes of the finish infusing that lifted black fruit, then there is a salty tang discernible on the aftertaste. This should drink well over the next 5 to 6 years. Drink now-2017.

I found my visit to Casarena stimulating, in the sense that they are patently dedicated to uncovering Mendoza through fastidious massal selection and pin-pointing specific terroirs. As I related to them at the time, I wished that would reflect upon the amount of new oak used on their top wines, and not be afraid to allow their nuances to show through, unimpeded by excessive wood. Before I broach those wines, let us begin with their entry-level range, which offers excellent value.
